On November 20, as part of Tourism Day at COP29, the State Tourism Agency of Azerbaijan and the UN Tourism signed a Letter of Intent, marking a commitment to strengthening collaboration on climate action in the tourism sector.
The agreement was signed by Fuad Naghiyev, Chairman of the State Tourism Agency of Azerbaijan, and Zurab Pololikashvili, Secretary-General of UN Tourism. The document expresses the joint intention to cooperate in the successful implementation of the "Tourism Enhanced Climate Initiative", with UN Tourism - as the UN body responsible for promoting sustainable tourism - playing a key role in this initiative.
The agreement builds on the Tourism Enhanced Climate Initiative, announced during the First Ministerial Meeting on Enhanced Climate Action in the Tourism Sector. It aims to better integrate tourism into national climate policies while also developing a global coordination mechanism and partnership platform to align the tourism industry with climate objectives.
The Letter of Intent provides a framework for collaboration, ensuring that the process initiated by this initiative continues beyond COP29. It also reinforces efforts to transform the tourism sector into a low-carbon and sustainable industry, making a significant contribution to global climate action.
